1966 Impala Super Sport Restoration Project Update!

Posted by Unknown

As promised, here is the update on the 1966 Impala Super Sport restoration.  The car is comming along beautifully.  With only a couple of minor setbacks, we should be right on track with her finish date of February 14th.

As you can see in the updated photos, the removal of the existing paint is coming along nicely.  The acrylic enamel that was on the vehicle is a thick, tough, single stage paint and the sanding takes a little longer than usual.  However, the body work that was previously done on the car was exceptional and she is still very straight in her lines.
As shown in the pictures to the right, the car did need some welded patches which have been taken care of.   The first patch was the one shown here in the top of the drivers side fender.  Some small holes just below the window line required a small metal patch which has been finished in this photo.
The next problem area was the drivers side quarter panel, which also required a couple of small metal patches to fill in the area along the extreme lower rear area of the quarter.  An area notoriously noted for this type of problem in a car of this age.
The next two problems to be addresed in this vehicle will be the nose and the gutters in the trunk area which collect any water that seeps through the deck lid. The pictures below show these two problem areas.

The trunk gutters will most likely be removed from another vehicle or replaced with an aftermarket trunk lining.  In either case, they will be welded in after removing the rotted metal of the existing gutters.  Although this problem looks worse than it really is, most vehicles of this age are stricken with this problem simply because of the purpose of the gutters themselves!  We all know that water and metal make rust and this type of damage is common.
The nose of the vehicle had previously been repaired and you can see that the previous damage was extensive.  This piece will be replaced with original equipement taken from another vehicle.
The final portion of this vehicle we want to point out in this update is the work done on the door jams.  In these final photos, you can see the doors were removed to repair the damage in the jam area.  We can't stress enough the care you need to take in this area of the vehicle.  The cars of this era have extremely heavy doors.  For this reason, the door jam areas and hinges must be extensively inspected for any weak areas and any rusted metal removed completely and metal patches be welded in place.  The following photos show the doors removed and the repair work done to the jam and hinge areas.

We'll be posting the next update next Monday, so be sure to check back to see the progress in our next report.  Remember, our technicians are always here to answer any questions you may have on your own project.  You can reach us at (813) 644-4497 from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Eastern Time, Monday thru Friday.

Register now for our newest "do-it-yourself" body repair articles comming in February!  Great articles written by our technicians for those of you who do your own project work!  Our techs describe the repairs in detail and give a list of materials necessary for the repairs.  A must have for the do-it-yourself library!

Till next time,

Restoration Project 1966 Impala Super Sport! Watch Her Makeover Here!

Posted by Unknown

Our newest restoration project is a 1966 Impala Super Sport.  She will be getting a complete makeover here at LDJ!  The restoration will be done using all original parts as she is in pretty good condition for her age!  This car should bring back some memories for a lot of our readers!  She is wearing the traditional Chevrolet "aqua blue" here!  A favorite of the '60's era.  When finished, she'll be done in a "mico metal-flake black".

This great car along with most of her counter-parts for that era is constructed of heavy gauge steel, and we do mean "heavy"!  She has some rust in the usual places for a car of this age and the main concern will be removing all traces of that rust in the lower doors, rocker panels and the lower quarters.  As you can see in the pictures, she has been preserved remarkably well and the rust is at a minimum!  All rust holes will be patched with heavy gauge metal welded to cover the holes.

The car was brought in with all of the mouldings, door handles, bumpers most of the emblems in place.  A real blessing for a vehicle this age as finding some of those items can be a real chore.  The window glass is also in great shape, again saving a lot of footwork trying to find original glass for a car of this vintage.  However, window glass can be made by most glass companies to fit vehicles like these, so if your project is missing any glass work, you can call any large auto glass company and get something to fit the bill if you're not having any luck on the Internet.  Original mouldings and emblems are usually available on the Internet.  However, there are some aftermarket suppliers that can provide you with substitues.  A list of these suppliers will be posted in our next article.

The tail lamps, head lamps and even the marker lights are still on the vehicle, again saving a lot of time in having to procure them elsewhere.  But, once again, although finding these parts as originals can be somewhat of an exhausting search, replacements are available through some suppliers, so don't give up if you're having some trouble locating what you need.  We'll be supplying some links here that should prove useful if you're looking for some hard to find parts for your own project.
The hood of our project is one piece that will need some extra attention.  It is an extremely heavy hood and it contains rust holes that will cause a problem in the finished project.  This is due to the fact that the hood is extremely flat and filling or patching the holes and maintaining the perfectly flat surface may take more time and labor than replacing the hood itself.  You can also see that the hood itself has sprung slightly and bending a hood of this gauge is difficult and sometimes not possible.  We'll be running a compelte article on this and other problems you might encounter with your project soon, so be sure to check back often or register now if you haven't already done so.

This will be the first of our tutorials on restoration projects in 2012.  Register now for automatic updates and don't miss out on some great information to help you with your own project!  You'll get great information on products, techniques and much more with pictures that will let you see exactly what happens along with an explanation from our technicians.

True Classic Cars Are A Thing of Beauty! Check Out These Unbelievable Classics!

Posted by Unknown

When we think of classic cars, most of my friends are thinking 1955 to 1957 Chevys and 1962 Corvette split windows.  We argue over what is the best muscle car, the Mustang, the Firebird, or the Camaro.  But, there are some classic cars out there that our era simply cannot compete with!

While surfing the net the other day, I came across a site which in my opinion pictures some of the finest automobiles ever manufactured.  Without a doubt, they are magnificently crafted and simply beautiful to look at.

The site is called "Jalopnik" which can be found at www.jalopnik.com.  Kudos to authors of this great site and the folks that sent in the great photos here!  Entitled "The Ten Coolest Cars of All Time", the article covers some of the greatest autos ever made.

We've picked out our fave five right here!  The following is taken from the blog itself and all credits belong to www.Jalopnik.com.  Please enjoy and feel free to visit the site for some truly incredible machinery!

We'd like to thank the writers at Jalopnik.com for providing this very interesting information and the great photos!

Sit back, relax and enjoy these truly wonderful vehicles!  I find the craftsmanship of these great vehicles absolutely facinating!  You can imagine the hours of work that must have gone into the building of each one of these great cars. We have picked out just 5 of these autos to feature here, but, there are many, many more.  The era of the wooden vehicle was truly a historic era and one that changed the future of transportation forever.

1939 Lagonda Rapide Tulipwood Tourer
This big British cruiser came powered with a 4.5 liter V12 churning out 225 horsepower. We imagine that's enough to get the brass-riveted tulipwood body up to speed with frightening alacrity for such a sizeable automobile.
The wood made for a good building material as it was light, could be made into aerodynamic shapes like this torpedo body, and was much stronger than the other lightweight car body material of the cay, canvas. If you're wondering how much it costs to get something as stunning as this in your massive garage, you'll have to have something around $450,000. That's how much this Lagonda went for when it was put up for auction back in 2007.

Our #2 selection is the Morgan.  What a beautiful work of art!

Morgan got its start building three-wheelers back in 1911, and it did a remarkably good job at it. The trikes were extremely affordable and are often praised for their fine handling. The Morgan we are more familiar with began in 1936 with the 4/4, Morgan's first four-wheeled car.
They had little engines, but didn't weight much on account of their wood frame. Low costs and an endless supply of eccentric British customers meant that Morgan could keep on building its elemental four-wheeled cars and never have to stop. You can still buy one of these things new today, and they are regular front runners in vintage races all over the world.
Morgan even keeps its wood thing going with their new heavily aluminum Aero 8, with its Ash frame getting plenty of punishment form a nice, big BMW V8.

1924 Hispano-Suiza Tulipwood Torpedo

Most of the legendary Spanish Hispano-Suizas from before World War II were vast, luxurious cruisers, but one stands out as a remarkable exception. This 1924 H6C, with a 200 horsepower, eight-liter straight-six wrapped up in a tulipwood body was built to take on southern Italy's great road race, the Sicilian Targa Florio.
The coachwork of ¾ inch strips of wood was built by a French aviation company, Nieuport and it weighed a mere 160 pounds. Like the Lagonda, the wood was riveted together with brass, and it looks absolutely amazing.

The Tryane II by Friend Wood
Built by German carpenter Friend Wood, this little three-wheeler is built off a Citroën 2CV, sharing its chassis, engine, and three of its wheels. The body, though, is all rich, cold-moulded African mahogany. It took the builder over 2,000 hours to construct this wooden masterpiece. That light construction gives this little trike, built first in 1989, a remarkably low weight of just 900 lbs, so its aerodynamic body can just buzz up to 100 miles an hour and get something between 50 and 70 miles per gallon on the way there.

Marcos Xylon

Up until 1969, the strange little British sports car builder Marcos built nearly all of its cars off of a basic plywood chassis that actually turned out to be quite effective for building successful road racing cars.
One such car was the Marcos Xylon, known to many as "the Ugly Duckling," for perhaps obvious reasons. The styling actually came from Frank Costin, who designed many of the most beautiful Lotus racers and even F1-winning Vanwalls.
The car didn't have much power, but it was extremely light, very aerodynamically efficient, and with the likes of Jackie Stewart and other great racers behind the wheel, the Xylon actually racked up an impressive competition record.
Read more on the Xylon and other classic wooden Marcos cars at this great fan website.

Preventative Maintenance - The Key to Big Savings On Auto Repair!

Posted by Unknown

The New Year has begun. Time to think about those new year's resolutions! If you're ike most people, new year's resolutions start out with the right idea in mind. The biggest problem is that many people try to implement either too many or set goals that simply cannot be reached either without help or that are unreasonable.

After many failed New Year's resolutions myself, I decided to take a look at what things I ACTUALLY have enough self dicipline to implement. One thing I really want to work on this year is "saving money". Each year when tax time arrives I see the books and each year I realize that there are many ways to save money that are both easy to do AND cost effective to implement! (There's no point in spending a million dollars to save a half million!)

One way to put some extra dollars in your pocket is through implementing a "preventative maintenance" program. Preventative maintenance means simply that. Prevent problems before they happen. In almost any circumstance, preventing a problem from happening is less expensive than fixing the problem once it HAS happened.

One place to implement a great preventative maintenance program is with your vehicle! Let's face it. Auto repairs are expensive. But, with vehicles, there are MANY ways to help prevent problems from happening that are WAY less expensive than the problems themselves.

Start with standard maintenance items like oil changes, lubrication, and brakes. These items are inexpensive to do, but, will save hundreds and even thousands of dollars in repairs if left undone! Let's take a look at the actual cost of doing some of these items.

Changing brake pads is a great one to start with. First of all, the brake pad manufacturer's actually provide you with a warning when this needs to be done! That's what all that "squeaking" is about! When you hear your brakes start to squeak, it means that the pads have worn down sufficiently to require replacement. The manufacturer installs "squeakers", small metal pieces that come in contact with your rotors and cause them to "squeak" thereby letting you know they are worn. A great idea when you think about it! Problem is....most people don't pay attention to this "squeaking" when it happens.

Make this a priority on your vehicle "preventative maintenance" program and here's what it can save you...... Replacing the brake pads on your vehicle will run you approximately $30 per wheel to accomplish. Purchase brake pads with a lifetime warranty and the cost is reduced to $20 per wheel the next time you do it! How does this save you money? Letting your brakes go until the "squeaking" stops....and it will......will cause the brake "rotors" to become damaged. Once they are damaged, they need to be replaced. Add $20 labor to each wheel AND the cost of the rotors (anywhere from $20 to $120 each depending on your vehicle)!!! Now there's a "chunk of change" that you COULD still have in your pocket had you done your preventative maintenance!

Next, let's take a look at changing your oil. Depending on your vehicle and the type of oil used, oil changes usually run anywhere from $20 to $40 depending on your vehicle and that includes the oil! Oil should be changed around every 3000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first.

Oil is the key ingredient in keeping your car, truck, suv or what have you running smoothly. Few things in your vehicle's motor are as important as oil! And, the bad things is, the things that happen when you DON'T change your oil are numerous AND far exceed the cost of a simple oil change! The worst of these being a blown engine! Yup, spending the "small change" for an oil change every 3 months COULD potentially save you the cost of a new motor, which, in some older vehicles, may exceed the cost of the vehicle itself! Also, when you change the oil, it's a good idea to lubricate the rest of the vehicle at the same time. Most oil change services include this lubrication. However, if you're a do-it-yourself'er, don't forget to lube the rest of the car while you're at it!

So, is everyone hearing the point I'm getting at here? I know these things are a pain. We're all busy and squeazing in an oil change or brake job into our busy schedules is hard. I don't mean that sarcastically, I mean it literally. If you're like most of us, we don't have enough time in the day as it is! But, working these things into our busy schedules CAN and WILL save money in the long run.

I have only touched base on two little items that will help save you money in 2012 and the list goes on and on. We will continue to give you ideas on money saving tips in the future! Please feel free to comment back with ideas of your own! After all, the idea here IS to help each other out!

Happy 2012 and we'll talk to you soon!

Revised Jan 23.

Just realised I had not posted anything for a month. I guess between my laptop packing it in and holiday season the time just got away. I have been doing some travel as well as changing work so busy times.
Todays desktop on my new laptop is an inspiration. This is the Troll Road in Norway which I was at the base of a long time ago but unable to ascend as the waterfall you see

More New Zealand motorcycle tour

I have finally had some time to edit all the video footage I was provided of the New Zealand ride I completed last November, but it is no Spielberg.

This was shot with a GoPro HD camera and all these action cams use a wide angle lens which when mounted high on a helmet of a rider has the unfortunate effect of slowing down movement yet remains not wide enough to capture all the scenery the rider
